Machine paint correction removes clear coat. That is not a side effect — it is the mechanism. Which means every correction job is a bet that there is enough clear coat left to take what you are about to remove, and the only way to stop guessing is to measure first. Here is how detailers read paint thickness, what the numbers mean, and why the reading is simultaneously your quote, your liability record and your go/no-go.
What a paint depth reading actually measures
A paint thickness gauge reports the total coating on a panel in microns (µm) — primer, base coat and clear coat together, sitting on the metal or plastic underneath. A thousandth of a millimetre. On a modern factory finish you are usually looking at something in the region of 100–150µm in total, of which the clear coat is a fraction, and it is only that fraction you have to play with.
The gauge does not break the number down for you. It gives you one figure per spot, and the skill is in reading the pattern across a car rather than any single value.
Why the reading is worth more than the gauge costs
Two things come out of it, and both of them are money.
1. It tells you the car has been repainted
Factory paint is laid down within a fairly tight band. A panel that reads markedly thicker than its neighbours has almost always been resprayed — and a resprayed panel behaves differently under a machine, hides filler, and may already have been polished thin by whoever did the work.
Finding it at intake, and photographing the reading, is what stops a customer three weeks later claiming the studio caused damage that arrived with the car. A detailer with a dated reading and a photo has a record. A detailer with a memory has an argument.
2. It tells you whether correction is safe
A panel already thin from a previous polish cannot take another cut. Go anyway and you burn through to primer, and the studio is buying a respray on a job it was paid a few thousand rupees for. The reading is the difference between declining one panel and losing the whole job’s margin several times over.
Which panels to measure, and in what order
Walk the car the same way every time, so nothing gets skipped on a busy morning. Horizontals first — they take the most UV and the most polishing over a car’s life, so they are where the clear coat is thinnest:
- Horizontals: bonnet, roof, boot or tailgate.
- Sides, front to back: front fenders, front doors, rear doors, rear quarters — left and right.
- Bumpers: front and rear, last, and read differently — see below.
Take several readings per panel, not one. A single spot on a bonnet tells you about that spot. Edges and crowns read lower than flat centres because that is where paint thins and where previous polishing concentrated.
The bumper trap
Bumpers are plastic. Plastic panels get a flex primer that steel does not, so they routinely read thicker than the metal around them on a completely original car. Judge a bumper against the same threshold you use for a bonnet and you will diagnose a respray on roughly every vehicle that comes through the door.
Read bumpers against their own baseline. A mismatch between the two bumpers, or between a bumper and the same bumper’s other side, is a much stronger repaint signal than the raw number.
Reading the numbers
Broadly, and with the caveat below doing a lot of work:
- Noticeably below the car’s own average — thin. Treat correction here as unsafe until you have looked closer. Reduce the cut, or decline the panel.
- Within the car’s own cluster — factory. Normal correction is on the table.
- Elevated — look closer. Could be a heavy factory finish, could be paint on paint.
- Far above the cluster — almost certainly a respray or filler underneath. Photograph it, tell the customer before you start, and price accordingly.
The caveat: these are conventional working bands used across the trade, not a manufacturer specification. They vary by make, by panel, and by whether the panel is steel or aluminium. A German saloon and a Japanese hatchback do not share a baseline. Treat a classification as a prompt to look closer — never as a verdict.
This is why the most useful comparison is always the car against itself. You are hunting for the outlier, not for a number someone published.
How the reading becomes the quote
A detailer who measures can say something a competitor quoting off a walk-round cannot:
“Your bonnet and roof are at the thin end — someone has polished this car before. I can do a light correction there and a full cut on the doors. The rear quarter has been resprayed; I’m not touching it, and here’s the reading.”
That is a more expensive quote than the one down the road, and it closes more often, because it is the only one on the table that sounds like it came from someone who has looked. The measurement is the sales tool.
Keeping it as a record, not a note
A reading is only worth what you can produce later. Written on a job sheet that goes in a drawer, it protects you until the drawer is tidied. What makes it durable is being stored against the vehicle, alongside the intake photos taken at the same moment, so the whole intake is one thing rather than four.

Where to start if you do not own a gauge yet
- Buy the gauge before the next polisher. It is the cheaper tool and it is the one that stops you paying for a respray.
- Measure every car for a month, including the ones you are not correcting. You are building an intuition for what normal looks like across the vehicles you actually see.
- Photograph the gauge on the panel for anything unusual. The photo and the number together are the record; either one alone is weaker.
- Say the numbers out loud to the customer. Most have never had anyone measure their car. It is the moment the quote stops being a price and starts being a diagnosis.
